W 2-Professorship for Computational Cosmology
21 August 2015. The University of Potsdam, Faculty of Science, and the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) invite applications in a joint appointment for a W 2-Professorship for Computational Cosmology.
Winners of "Young Scientist Contest" visit AIP
7 August 2015. Three students from Israel, all winners of the „Young Scientist Contest“ sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung - BMBF), visited AIP on 6 August.
Matthias Winker new administrative chairman of AIP Board
4 August 2015. Matthias Winker is appointed as new administrative chairman at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP). Together with the scientific chairman and speaker of the Board, Prof. Dr. Matthias Steinmetz, Winker completes the Executive Board of the institute.
Getty Grant for Einstein Tower
25 June 2015. The Getty Foundation announces a second series of grants for exemplary 20th century buildings as part of its Keeping It Modern initiative. The Einstein Tower receives one of the fourteen grants totaling over $1.75 Million awarded for the conservation of modern architecture around the world. The grant will be used for conservation planning and understanding about the proper treatment of the Einstein Tower.
Emil Popow (1950-2015)
On June 19 2015 our dear colleague Emil Popow passed away. Over a period of more than 40 years, Emil Popow took part in the life of the AIP and made fundamental contributions to the development of the technical section. From 2003 to 2014, Emil Popow served as head of the technical section. Many projects of the AIP, from the operation of the Great Refractor to the construction of PEPSI would not have been possible without his significant contributions.
13 June: Long Night of Sciences
The Long Night of Sciences took place on Saturday, 13 June in Berlin and on the Telegrafenberg in Potsdam. The Einstein Tower and Great Refractor welcomed many curious visitors.

The Milky Way’s History: 592. WE-Heraeus-Seminar
1 June 2015. In the first week of June 2015 the 592. WE-Hereaus Seminar in Bad Honnef brings together representatives from the extensive ground-based surveys, spacecraft missions CoRoT, Kepler and future Plato-2, as well as galaxy formation and stellar evolution experts to set a roadmap for future endeavors in the field of spectroscopic surveys, asteroseismology and chemodynamical models.
CCI meets in Potsdam
22. May 2015. The International Scientific Committee (known internationally by its initials in Spanish) "CCI" held its 73rd meeting at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP), Potsdam, Germany in May 2015. The meeting was sponsored and held on behalf of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG.
Matthias Steinmetz honoured with Foersterpreis 2015
29 April 2015. The "Wilhelm-Foerster-Preis 2015" is awarded to Matthias Steinmetz, scientific chairman of the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) and director of the research area Extragalactic Astrophysics. It is annualy granted by the Urania Potsdam.
First Light for PEPSI
22 April 2015. The Potsdam Echelle Polarimetric and Spectroscopic Instrument (PEPSI) has received its first celestial light through the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). Astronomers from the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam showed the instruments incredible capabilities at different wavelengths and resolving powers. Among the first targets were several of the bright Gaia-ESO benchmark stars, magnetically active stars, solar-like stars with planets, a solar twin in M67, Jupiter’s four Galilean moons, and the bright Nova Sgr 2015b.
Funding success for innoFSPEC
27 March 2015 The Federal Ministry of Education and Research will fund the Centre for Innovation Competence innoFSPEC for another five years. Federal Minister Johanna Wanka praises the scientific expertise.
The dark side of light
12 February 2015. In the highly interdisciplinary research project "Loss of the Night", scientists of very different institutions of the Leibniz Association investigate the increasing illumination of the night, its ecological, cultural and socioeconomic effects, and the effects on human health. Their aim is to develop improved lighting concepts and sustainable technologies.
Partial solar eclipse observed by SDI
23 October 2014. The images show a large Sunspot that appeared two days earlier. The SDI telescope uses the Sun as a guide star to keep its image to be well-projected onto the entrance fibres to the spectrograph. As it is equipped with a guiding video camera, it allows us to observe any other events of interest like the partial solar eclipse in Arizona on October 23 which lasted from 14:21 to 16:45 MST with a maximum of the obscuration up to 33% at 15:37 MST (UTC-7).
Humboldt Research Fellowship for Jenny Sorce
22 October 2014. The Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) welcomes Jenny Sorce, who received a Humboldt Research Fellowship for Postdoctoral Researchers.
Karl Schwarzschild Fellow 2014: Else Starkenburg
1 September 2014. The AIP welcomes this years Karl Schwarzschild Fellow Else Starkenburg. She completed her Ph.D. in 2011 at the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. Else Starkenburg also holds an M.Sc. in Physics and Astronomy and an M.A. in Theoretical Philosophy.
Thinkshop on Cosmology in Potsdam
25 August 2014. The Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) hosts its 11th Thinkshop under the title "Satellite galaxies and dwarfs in the local group“. From August 25 to 29 over 130 scientists will get together on the Potsdam Telegrafenberg to discuss their research in the field of cosmology.
Wempe award for Brent Tully
30 June 2014. Today Prof. R. Brent Tully from the Institute for Astronomy Honolulu, Hawaii receives the Wempe Award in recognition of his groundbreaking research about the structure of galaxies and the large-scale structure of the cosmos. Since many decades Tully has been promoting the analysis and mapping of galactic structures and flows. The award ceremony will take place from 3:30 p.m. at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP).
CosmoSim Database for cosmological simulations released
23 June 2014. The CosmoSim database (www.cosmosim.org) has now been released after an intensive testing period. This service to the scientific community is the successor of the MultiDark database (www.multidark.org) and it is used as a platform for publishing and sharing data products from cosmological simulations.
